DM,

Defending religion by the fact that there are a few pro-intellect 
theologians doesn't really account for much.  I read the two books 
you recommended 'Life, Life' and 'The Religion of Being', by Don 
Cupitt.  Actually, I thought they were both great, but I can't 
imagine how Cupitt can call himself a Christian.  Christianity is 99 
percent dogma.  And as long as the young are being indoctrinated with 
this claptrap and told 'it is the truth', I'd say DMB is 
correct.  Aren't you being a bit of an intellectual elitist?
