Hey Matt,
The one thing that always stuck me about Jon's appearance on Crossfire was
how brave it was. Here's this man who was supposed to come on the show and
be funny and somehow all the producers at CNN grossly underestimated him.
Within a week Tucker Carlson had lost his job.
I think your post was also brave. It takes some balls to step back from a
conversation and say: wait a minute, there's something here that doesn't
feel right - something false.
When you wrote:
The MD isn't just a conversation between two people, its a conversation with
an audience--an unknown audience at that. And so the way a person speaks
changes.
I had to wonder... why? There should never be any shame in sharing with an
audience what you would share with an individual. You should use the same
level of honesty and truth with one as you do with many. Anything that is
truly personal and not for the intake of the masses should be spoken in
person....
Theory, it seems to me, is only useful if it helps you understand
something. It's not something a girl should use as a shield for her
ignorance.
It's odd how people on this discussion list seem to think, though, that one
should be able to communicate as easily with a man from the other side of
the planet as with the brother they've known for thirty years.
The other day I was talking to a friend from New Orleans. I said to him
"You've almost got me sold." I had to repeat myself four times before he
finally understood what I was saying and then he finally replied, "You don't
say that to a boy from Louisiana dawlin' but if you want I suppose I could
fix to have you introduced to the Old South - I'm sure you'd fetch a nice
price."
Perhaps some people need to stop assuming that since we speak the same
language, we speak the same language.
Choose a path with heart because the end is nowhere,
Rebecca
