Hey Rebecca,
Rebecca said:
I think your post was also brave. It takes some balls to step back from a conversation and say: wait a minute, there's something here that doesn't feel right - something false.
Matt:
I don't think what I said was brave. When I said that I was going "off script," I was being a little disingenuous because there is a larger script that DMB and I are still enacting--and I want to get off _that_ script, too. The problem with saying that I'm brave is that DMB, in this sense, is being just as brave: most of what he says is about how my manner is all wrong, which is what "theatre world" is describing from my position. What I want to do is drop _all of this_, including the larger script that this post is another peice of. I just want to talk about philosophy. I just want a discussion. The trouble is that this script currently, where we talk about what's wrong with this discussion, doesn't lead into the script I do want to enact (or rather, write). We both simply have to drop the script. We both need to just let it go. I feel like DMB keeps bringing us back to it. Every snide comment, pot shot, off hand remark, brings us back to this script. I'm forced to ignore them to have the discussion I want to have (which, from my perspective, I shouldn't have to do), but eventually it becomes impossible. So I implode and write something like "Theatre and Definitions."
Matt
