In another thread, Platt wrote to SA...

"Take heart, my friend. We are constantly fed a diet of doom and gloom
by the media (and some of our friends) because negative news and
attitudes always trump the positive. Seems to be a trait of human
nature."

This was addressed in the Power of Nightmare series, I recommend you check it
out. From terrorist to illegal immigrants, from gay marriages to "communists",
from conservationalists to Hollywood movies, from the "liberal media" to
"leftist college professors", from "secular public schools" to Darwinism, from
Hip-Hop Music to the lazy, slacker, stupid poor suckiling off the welfare teets
of the Nation, "America is constantly under some Evil Threat, and so we sell
the myth that blind adherence to State, The Pure Moral State of America, we buy
into politico rhetoric of "we will protect you from [this fear]". War on this,
war on that. A constant state of "war on something".

With the collapse of the Soviet Union, as the Absolute Evil that America (the
Absolute Good) had set itself up against, new and ever-changing boogeymen have
to be invented, the people must always see something as a "Great Threat". And
the politicos (BOTH sides, mind you) pander and sell this fear.

Whether or not such a "need to be afraid" is human nature, the need to have the
world illusively dichotomized into Absolute Good vs. Absolute Evil seems to be.
Complex historical situations are perverted into wars that pit us (The Noble
Warrior Fighting Eternally For Truth and Justice) against them (The Evil
Barbarian Seeking to Enslave and Destroy the Human Race). But one thing is for
sure, the politicos are playing it for all its worth.

And so goes the Nightmare... "You reap what you sow."
