All cultures throughout history have consisted of people "having to go out and...make a living". It was so in pre-history and will be so in the forseeable future. Why is this separating rather than uniting the culture?
If something catastrophic enough happened (economic collapse, pandemic disease, attack by aliens), for some people "interpersonal communication could head for a break-down". For cooler heads it would become even more valuable.

If one is working at a subsistence level, then $ is rigidly valued because it can be used for only one thing: survival. But for most people, $ is used to educate their children, improve their surroundings, take vacations, and to satisfy in a dynamic way countless other of their values.
