similarity of 1) & 2).
Only 2) tells us something of substance."

     Yes Craig, but this is what biologist are saying
today, and this will probably never change.  Science
identifies, and science can be correct or incorrect. 
Science is also an activity with a language (theories)
that help scientists view the world.
