Hello Craig, Khaled, Platt, and others,
Craig said to Khaled: "You need to distinguish
the RIGHT to pay for a celebrity endorsement from the
EXERCISE of that right. ("I disagree with what you
say but will defend to the death your right to say
it.") It is not hypocracy to support the former while
lamenting the latter. If Nike values a celebrity
endorsement at $10 M. & the athlete accepts the $10M,
on what basis could a third party prevent it?"
The $ thing. That's none other than static
quality. The value that people put into shoes. It's
come a long way from sandals and bare feet wouldn't
you say. There was once a time when we could go out
into the woods find some grass by a creek, river,
pond, or lake and make our own shoes. Then we found
the value in cow hide. Now its' synthetic leather
(whatever that is), and the $ involved is millions.
This is the static quality of today's culture. Some
make millions off of shoes, while others don't have
the quality time to sit down and make their own shoes.
Then you throw in a little social style, and many
have gotta have that whisk mark on their shoes that
Nike puts there. Without that whisk mark some could
be laughed at. Do you think a child could get away
with wearing comfortable, damp resistant grass and
moss shoes to a junior high school today? Or would
others laugh and show off their Nike shoes? Static
quality is just the current definition of what this
current society defines for us all. The intellectual
quality of shoes? Wouldn't that just have to do with
practicality? And grass or deer shoes, if somebody
has the quality time to make, wouldn't they do what
shoes are to do, without all that social pressure? I
think so.
Declaration of Independence needs quality time to be
upheld!
And for those of you that wonder how do shoes fit into
a document made over a hundred years ago? Where are
Nike shoes made now? Where is the market taking them?
What forces control our lives, especially our local
lives? We as a country still have the $ to buy these
shoes and market these shoes, as long as, we depend
upon other countries. I remember reading once how
Jefferson wanted the sugar market to be filled by
maple sugar. He said our dependence upon sugar cane
locks this country into a dependence that will
threaten its' own independence. When he meant
independence, he was looking at the country at large.
Just look at the oil issue? We need the Middle East
to be calm in order to get our oil. Now Venezuela
(much oil here) is boasting and perceiving the U.S. to
be an enemy. This does not mean we need to fight
them. It is that our dependence gets us caught up in
issue that we just have to shallow hard in order to
keep our way. China, major human rights failures, but
we need their business so we shallow our independence
to keep them satisfied, and yet how much of this
relationship with China will come back to hit the U.S.
in the butt? Yeah, it's a tough world, and decisions
need to be made all the time. The U.S. economy is
doing well, no question. Yet, the $ issues, the power
relationships that put us into positions that are
inevitably immoral, yet, the $ g-d will lead all
towards values that are free - right? Wrong. I have
a hard time seeing how $ gets us through all our
troubles, but for some the more or less they have the
better off society is, because freedom is marked not
by our time with our families or time alone, but
freedom in this culture is measured by how much people
are allowed to freely make $. If no regulations exist
then we are more free and why care about How we get
the $, but everybody has heard this from me before so
I'm just not going to rely on my thoughts, listen to
the wind, and pray for my guidance. I'll exercise
wisdom, and the negativity that I have shed about $,
as stated before, will be released and I'll just have
to accept that this is the static quality of today's
culture and be open-minded if a dynamic new or other
way exists. If $ is the best way, then it is the best
way. If not, then not. Maybe its' the way I am
looking at this discussion of $ that needs altering.
It would be easier if we can put this topic of $ into
some intellectual activity that helps answer the
following questions. I am asking others their opinion
to these that follow:
Is $ a social level or is $ an intellectual level
or another level of value?
Or are there different ways to value $ that move
$ into biological, social, or intellectually dominated
values?
Maybe these questions would help make it more
clear as to how we approach the question of $.
