[MD] Neo-conservatism

As I understand it Strauss was concerned by the fate of Germany's Weimar
Republic. He believed Germans had been paralyzed by moral relativism. They
had no static latch, no cultural immune system to fend off the Nazis.
He sought to establish a philosophical basis for declaring one way of life
morally superior to another. Whether this is possible or not, I find it
repulsive.
Social Darwinism was a bastardization of evolutionary theory. Used to
justify American treatment of indigenous peoples after the Civil War, it
made virtue of dishonor and genocide.
The only thing that makes my palms sweat more than moral equivocation is
moral certainty.
Terrorists find inspiration in everything from Islam to Jodie Foster.
If our only choice is between Weimar wussiness and John Wayne genocide I
fear for our grandchildren.

David, (con't)

Ooops, I sent the post before I finished.

I read the Weekly Standard article and I agree that it, too, is slanted. It
does not address the central issue, which is the history of the relationship

between Strauss and the current administration. For instance it asserts that

Cheney, Powell, Rumsfeld and Rice are not Straussians but it doesn't compare

and contrast their views with Strauss'. So we just need to believe this guy
and feel all warm and fuzzy about Strauss because he was such a good guy.

I personally have never read Strauss' work, but it would seem that you and I

and anyone else who is interested in the subject, should do so.
