     $, as anything else, is quality.  DQ/SQ together.
 Now when we want to delve into its' definition, its'
static quality, we can easily slip right back into
plain-old quality where we find DQ, again.  So as we
define $ and try to stick it into Pirsig's
encyclopedia of levels, I too must as Gene says above,
"...Hmm, have to think about this further."  By the
way Gene, your historical account does provide insight
into how society and intellect has changed its'
definition of $ over time, and the level interactions
clearly is involved.  So here again, I don't know if
we can sharply split these levels away from each other
since quality is everywhere, meaning DQ/SQ never
really split totally apart.  Therefore the levels
can't totally split apart, but I thought, and I
thought I read Pirsig explain that the levels are
independent so the levels must have some definition
unto themselves?
