Actually I just read that section and he says that Metaphysics are the
degeneracy, and the mystics Pure Reality is correct. He then continues to
say that avoiding degeneracy is it's own form of degeneracy, so he'll go
ahead and make his metaphysics anyways. And he'll continue to drink and pick
up pretty ladies at bars if he feels like it.

It sorta seems like he's validating both sides of the spectrum. This seems
like more of an excuse to allow him to do what he is planning to do, as
opposed to some scathing rebuke to hippies.

I definately feel that Pirsig was against any and all extreme sides of
anything. He saw that Hip was correct, and Square was correct. They were
just lacking, incomplete. So he brought them together.

The truth generally resides in the middle. You know what I mean?
