Previously I quoted from The Guardian. Here are some other sources:
CNN Oct 28, 2005
"TEHRAN, Iran (CNN) -- Iran's new president has repeated a remark from
a former ayatollah that Israel should be "wiped out from the map,"
insisting that a new series of attacks will destroy the Jewish state,
and lashing out at Muslim countries and leaders that acknowledge
Israel.
"The remarks by Mahmoud Ahmadinejad -- reported by Islamic Republic
News Agency -- coincide with a month-long protest against Israel called
"World without Zionism" and with the approach of Jerusalem Day."
NBC News Oct 30, 2005
"President Mahmoud Ahmadinejads remark on Wednesday that Israel should
be wiped off the map sparked international condemnation, including a
rebuke from the U.N. Security Council.
"But the uproar has caused confusion in Iran, where such rhetoric has
been commonplace since the 1979 Islamic revolution. Anti-Israeli
diatribes are painted as murals along most highways and are heard
regularly at Friday prayers."
BBC News Oct. 27, 2005
"The European Union and Russia have joined condemnation of the Iranian
president's public call for Israel to be "wiped off the map".
"Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's remark has already been condemned by individual
EU states and Canada who all summoned Iranian diplomats for an
explanation."
And so on. Maybe all these sources got it wrong. It wouldn't be the
first time. But, I haven't found any sources who claim Ahmadinejad
didn't mean the people of Israel who, after all, voted for the current
Israel government. If you can cite your sources, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks,
Platt
