Seem to recall George Steiner (yes the guy who gave Pirsig a leg up
with his favoiurablke review) discusses this idea in his book
In Bluebeard's Castle. He talks about a possible motive of revenge
on Jews for bringing religious sentiment to the pagans of northern Europe,
a sort of revenge against the experience of guilt,
but I am no doubt cutting a subtle suggestion bluntly.
