I think we've had a similar discussion before.
On the historical side, I think people have been treated as chattle whenever someone could get away with it.  It's not a modern malady as the history of warfare or fuedalism shows.
On the liguistic side, you see language as constraining the possibilities of what we think.  I see language as providing for the maximum possible ways of thinking.
