Hello Ham, Craig, Micah, David M, Platt,
[Steve H said]
If it doesn't than why do some people suffer in extreme poverty?
[Ham siad]
How do I answer this? Let me recount the reasons:
-- Ignorance-- Stupidity-- Irresponsibility-- Immaturity--
Profligacy-- Laziness-- Apathy
-- Unstructured goals-- Lack of foresight-- Fear of making choices
-- Preference to live on welfare-- Disorientation (due to drugs or
deleterious life styles)
-- Criminal behavior (and time in prison)-- Inability to assimilate in
the workforce
-- Inability to assimilate in society-- Sociopathic attitudes
-- Low self-esteem-- Celebrity worship-- Physical disability-- Mental disability
[Steve H now continues]
What were you assuming my picture of "people suffering in extreme
poverty" was? Let me talk specifically about those suffering in
extreme poverty as those people who are malnourished, infected with
disease, most likely a child, most likely on the continent of Africa.
I am not talking about the same people Ham is talking about, which
describes "unemployed" people instead. I assume we all agree that a
starving African child isn't guilty of "Celebrity worship" or
"Criminal behavior" or "Laziness" etc... :-)

Well maybe it is hard to say, perhaps capitalism will
unify the world (globalisation) and we shall all
be workers and consumers in a world of plenty.
But can this happen? For us to all to have western levels
of consumption we need 3 planets for the current population
and resources are running out.
[Steve H continues]
Out of curiosity, have you (or anyone else) read "One World: The
Ethics of Globalization" by Peter Singer? I think it provides great
insight into some problems involving globalization, including poverty
and the environment.
[Steve H wondering aloud to everyone]
Here's a little question for you all. Pretend you are eating dinner
with your family on Thanksgiving. Turkey, stuffing, layered jell-o,
pumpkin pie, and whatever other food people have on Thanksgiving. Now
imagine that 20 starving, impoverished, disease-ridden African
children are standing outside watching through the window. Would you
feel guilty eating you meal then? (Or maybe they are just too lazy or
irresponsible to deserve food :-)?)
Regards,
Steve H
