One decides to wear a head scarf, the other puts a bumper sticker that
says "WWJD"
You are right, some of these women will chose to do so.
I remember in my women's study class, when these issues came up, foot
binding and so on, and then you find out that it' s the older women
forcing on the younger ones. It's like a fraternity hazing, you would
think that if they think of the humiliation and degradation they went
through, that they would chose not to pass such 'legacies' on to the
future generations.
Why does that happen?
Is it like physical and sexual abuse, if it's done to you wish to do it
to others?
Is it a right of passage?
Is it something to do so you can belong to the club?
Part of the problem that I see happening now, is that modernity ( which
gets equated with westernization) came to some of these cultures too
fast, and this is a way to hold on to something. Now of course you have
the religious nut jobs out there, who are adding fuel to the fire.
You also have an identity crisis. Just like the teenager rebelling with
purple hair and a ring nose. i would not be surprised, if the next
western rebellion among teenagers would be for girls to wear a burka.
I mean the shock factor of having a nose ring is so passe, but wearing a
burka to your high school prom is a sure way to stir the pot.
Having a Mcdonalds around each corner around the globe may not be a great
idea after all. Look I am not defending what these people are doing, but
suddenly when everyone start looking, acting and talking the same,
someone's has got to want to be different.
Of course when all they have to see of the west is Jerry springer, Borat
and Madona, the are going to go to extreme to protect themselves of such
'evils'.
It's a lot easier to 'protect' your teenage son or daughter by not
letting them go out unchaperoned, than to instill good morals in them. In
a way that's what these people chose to do. Sadly, lots of those
reactions are political.
Yes these women do that by choice, partially to feel that they belong to
a sisterhood and to separate themselves from the men.
