Gav says:
war is very very good for the economy. with war
billions are made on producing and using weapons. then
after the devastation other corporations make billions
from rebuilding. war is very sensible in a capitalist
economy.

illness is very good too. cancer, heart disease,
depression etc make trillions for the medical and
pharmaceutical industries. better to cultivate then
treat (porrly) disease, rather than prevent it. where'
s the dough in prevention?

.... this was a high quality post, gav everyone should view it in its entire form

Rarely have I seen such a dead bang right-on definition of the American version of capitalism.

Gav, you may have missed a point or two:

How about the people that like to pound their chest about our fabled "constitutional rights". The version that we read about in school largely are applied to only the Upper class, those who can afford to pay one or more attorneys a retainer plus $200 to $300 per hour to enforce these rights in a court of law against the superior power and resources of the state.

The disappearing middle class has no hope of competing in this arena. For most of the population constitutional rights don't exist and everyone knows it. Lots of people are incarcerated in California. Per Capita... the prison census may be almost tops among the 50 states. Come to California enjoy the polluted beaches (after a rainstorm) and tour our marvelous system of prisons!!

Few people are aware of the 5 country NSA (no such agency) program popularly known as Esssshelon...purposely misspelled. If you don't know the program or the proper spelling of what I refer to, don't bother your pretty brains with the subject. But a quick look at the wikipedia on these two subjects would curl anyones hair, who thinks we live in a free society. And be a good beginning for ones own personal grounding in "reality".

Remember... you are guilty, unless you can prove yourself innocent in an IRS audit... Which turns the normal legal standard upside down. Don't worry the government does not want to put you in jail, they only want to absorb all your worldly assets. Believe me, they have the power to do it. No problem Has the Patriot Act as amended and re-enacted ever been seriously discussed by this group?

Even Rome didn't last forever. I pity the poor army that tries to beat us. But the new formula for war we see unfolding in Iraq is one of the worlds answers to the phenomenon known as America.

Economists refer to an idea (the missing link), which seems to be largely ignored by our society. Economic externalities, which are not appreciated and factored into our economic "valuation decisions" is the one key missing link. What does it mean??

It helps one deeply understand why this system is so dangerous in a very subtle way. Our system is not compatible with the planets healthy ecology and a sustainable natural environment. Hence, I believe mother nature will put an end to our system sometime early in this century. Remember, the Islamic world did not steer Katrina into New Orleans. People don't realize the power of floods, drought, earthquakes, et al. What ever did happen to the powerful USSR??
The end game could be much more rapid than most would believe.

These conclude my happy thoughts for today. What you folks really need is to recruit a few more Buddhists into this discussion group.

So strap on your seat-belt, gav, it should be a very interesting ride.

  Best,
  Mary Poppins (Robbie)

built in obsolence is great too. why build something
to last when you build it to break down and sell
another, and another, and another. crap stuff is great
for the capitalist economy.

advertising, especially to kids, is great in a
capitalist economy. their vulnerable minds lap up
directives to eat shit food, buy this or that piece of
crap...and usually the parents accede to their demands
for shit cos they can't be bothered arguing. and of
course: 'give me the child until he is 7 and i will
show you the man'. hey worked pretty well for
catholicism.

what's good for the economy is infinite growth. more
resources, more products, more services, more wars,
more cancer, more depression, more jails (cheap
labour!), more sweatshops (ditto).....don't
stop....paradise is around the corner.

we live in a society that is held to ransom by an
abstraction - the economy - that assigns a monetary
value to everything and sees this AS THE ONLY VALUE.

this is not very MOQ. monetary value is one social
subset of value proper. it is a subsidiary value to
intellectual values of logic, fairness, foresight,
democracy etc. and trumping all - quality. shit is
shit full stop. ever watch ads: they advertise shit.
that's why it has to be advertised. otherwise people
won't buy it. simply: corporate capitalism produces
(through its taylorist/fordist mass production
paradigm) shit. shit that it has to convince us to
buy, eat, live in etc.

what am i advocating here? well not a socialist
economy, that's for sure. the socialist economies we
have seen last century are really just state
capitalism. they are inferior in some ways to
corporate capitalism; in someways they are superior.
but they both suck from an objective intellectual
viewpoint. they both produce shit by and large.

no. i think it's about QUALITY(funny that). do we get
quality from making things as quickly and cheaply as
possible? do we? no we don't. this is obvious.

our economy is based on expediency. time is money.
time is money time is money. where do you SPEND your
time? let's accelerate towards oblivion.

our economy is based on greed and fear. the stock
market runs on these primal instincts. nothing
sophisticated here. nothing special. nothing very
evolved here. greed and fear: hell of a way to run a
world.

so what's the answer gav...well fortunately a bloke
prepared one earlier for me: quality. if it ain't
quality fuck it off. don't buy shit. don't eat shit.
don't put shit on your body. quality and shit are
opposites, except for in the garden!
