[MD] What is the intellectual argument about Islamic veil wearing?

[Platt]
Who wear veils who don't sympathize with radical Islam? Do you hear any
veiled women speaking out against their radical compatriots?

[Arlo]
Are all Muslims "radical"? Maybe you should read Khaled's informative post
as to the many reasons people choose to wear veils.

But so far this is how I see your logic, and it involves two distinct (but
rhetorically mixed) aspects.

All people who were veils sympathize with radical Islam.
Radical Islam wants to destroy America.
Banning veils will stop radical Islam.

Wearing veils is "outside our social customs".
Society has a moral right to demand conformity through law.
Banning veils is part of moral, forced conformity.

Either one is dreadful in its own right.

Then there is (among many) the remnant of a previous exchange. Society has
the right to forbid by law "social icons of organized religion". So all
those crosses and Christmas displays that fly in the face of intellect
should be banned, right? (Along with those WWJD bracelets).

[Platt on the KKK]
I don't mean coming in to give a speech and leaving. I mean living on
campus, attending classes, teaching classes, eating in campus facilities,
attending college sports events, being around and about you night and day
dressed in their KKK regalia. You wouldn't support a campus regulation
banning their dress? How about Nazi military uniforms? Or no clothes at
all? Come on, Arlo. Just be honest, keemosavi.

[Arlo]
No, I do not support restrictions on free speech. I'm sure there are plenty
of racists who "live on campus, attend classes..." wait, I see your point.
These aren't the most educational focused of people. When they are on
campus, its generally outsiders protesting the "leftist, non-racist" tone
on campus. At any rate, no, I do not support anyone's right to peaceable
speech, or to choose what they wish to wear, restricted. It doesn't
threaten me to see a bunch of idiots wearing Gestapo garb. As for no
clothes at all, again, there are health issues in some cases, but outside
there, why should I care what people choose to wear, or not wear. You see,
"freedom" for me does not mean making everyone conform to my personal
social customs and habits.

But once again you show your true colors. Freedom ain't no big deal unless
it involves earning money. You call a restriction on dumping toxic goo into
our rivers a violation of freedom, but want to lock someone up for wearing
a veil. Welcome to America.
