Case pulled this:
American General Philip Sheridan said, "Let them kill, skin and sell until
the buffalo are exterminated. Then your prairies can be covered with
speckled cattle and the festive cowboy."
dmb says:
General Sheridan was also the guy who said, "The only good Indian is a dead
Indian". He was an exceptionally murderous son of a bitch, eh? Here in
Denver, they named a street after him.
Case adds:
Sheridan was charged with subduing the plains. He began with the Comanche
and Kiowa. The Comanche warriors counted coupe. A guy would do something
insanely daring to embarrass his enemy. Chief Dan George talks about this in
Little Big Man.
Sheridan also prosecuted the Red River War, the Ute War and the Black Hills
War. During one of the campaigns of the later, Custer was defeated by the
Sioux military leader Crazy Horse acting on a vision of the medicine man
Sitting Bull. Thomas Mails calls the Sioux the Mystic Warriors of the
Plains. Among them Crazy Horse was a legend. He possessed a stone which he
wore behind his ear. It was prophesied the no white man's bullet could wound
him. None did. He eventually attended peace talks where he was arrested and
placed in a guard house. He was later killed in a struggle with Indian
guards.
It is said that before the battle Sitting Bull offered thirty strips of his
own flesh as a sacrifice. The Sioux believe that all a man owns is his own
body. Therefore the only sacrifice a man can make is a sacrifice of his
body. During the Sun Dance men would be lifted into the air by ropes
attached to pieces of bone inserted under the pectoral muscles of the chest.
Some times they would attach buffalo skulls to the ropes and drag them
around. This is dramatized in A Man Called Horse.
Years after Little Bighorn Sitting Bull expressed interest in the Ghost
Dance especially the part where wearing shirts with painted symbols on them
and dancing made warriors impervious to enemy bullets. The Wounded Knee
Massacre occurred shortly after Sitting Bull was killed by guards at Pine
Ridge Reservation. Pine Ridge is also where Black Elk was at this time.
Earlier I said that he was at Standing Rock.
