Dear Dan and Arlo,
Education is primarily thinking for oneself.
 
This provides an index of how the Quality of an educational institution can  
be valued.
 
'In fact you can measure the quality of a university by comparing
the  relative strengths of the celebrity patterns and the intellectual
patterns.  You never got rid of the celebrities, even at the best
universities, but  there the intellectuals could ignore them and be in a
class by themselves.'  (Lila. ch. 20)

 
I don't disagree with Arlo's analysis, i simply posit educational  
institutions which do not encourage thinking for oneself are oxymoronic.  Educational 
institutions which do not encourage thinking for oneself  indoctrinate.
The split between social and intellectual patterns in the educational  
institutions of a particular culture indicate the health of that culture.
