I think that anecdote is a microcosm of the whole issue facing us.
99% of "normal" life does not value quality.
I too "am working in IT until I can afford to retire early", which
isn't going to be too early at this rate ;-) (In my case "being able
to afford it" is bound up with commitment to raising a family.)
