Why leap at all? Humans can be objectively shown to be humans, and robots
can be objectively shown to be robots. But animals can not be objectively
shown to "think".

He's right! Maybe everyone but me is a robot. I don't Know! I simply take it
on faith that they are also thinking human beings with a whole world inside
Their head too.
And once I allow for other people to be conscious, it's not a big leap from
that to monkeys for me.
