This says more about your understanding than it does about David's. European
countries can not be considered to be 'socialist', they are a much more complex
combination of qualities including capitalism...
[Arlo]
Welcome, Jim. I think you peg this. Nothing Dewey says is "socialist", nor were
any of the descriptions of Hull House, Highlander Folk School or the Danish
Folk Schools. Nor was "deep democracy". Nor anything else David Granger wrote.
But this is Platt's Holy War, where the mere mention of the evil "community"
brings hyperpolitization and all the rhetorical fear we've come to expect.
[David Granger had written]
"Freedom and individuality are not inborn givens. They are the results or the
fruits of a consciously tended communal life."
[Jim]
This sounds like it fits the MOQ. Freedom and Individuality are sciously
intellectual qualities.
[Arlo]
Yep, again. And intellectual patterns are the result of collective activity on
the social level (just as social patterns are the result of collective activity
on the biological level). Its just basic MOQ.
What do you think of Dewey's ideas on education? Do they resonate with Pirsig?
Do the schools mentioned (Hull House, Highlander, and the Danish Folk Schools)
sound like MOQ inspired endeavors?
