Gav:
i thought static patterns were abstracted from
immediate experience.
am i wrong?

Mark 23-10-06: Hello Gav.
In the sense that static patterns are abstracted from immediate experience
they are stable expectations.

Gav:
i keep thinking of 'nausea' by sartre.
in it he describes the experience of sitting looking
at a familiar tree in a park. on this particular
occasion he sees something else, not his familiar
tree; it becomes alien, infinite, horrible even; he is
not aware of what it is.

Mark 23-10-06: This sounds like static patterns of expectation have been
weakened and DQ is flooding in.

Gav:
are static patterns conceptual?

Mark 23-10-06: Intellectual patterns are concepts aren't they?
Social patterns are behavioural.
One may conceptualise behaviour also, but that is an intellectual activity.

Gav:
i keep thinking of schopenhauer too: the world as will
and idea.

does a static pattern become a static pattern only
when we *recognise* it; or do we experience static
patterns immediately?

Mark 23-10-06: I suggest we experience static patterns as expectation.
If we are not aware of a pattern of bevaviour we either don't experience it
or have our static patterns weakened by surprise.
That is to say, we experience sq as an expectation or not at all.
DQ is always new, and the unexpected weakens our existing patterns.

Gav:
if we experience them immediately (pre-conceptually)
then how does this relate to the 'undifferentiated
aesthetic continuum', which is a synonym for
pre-conceptual 'Quality' reality.

Mark 23-10-06: I don't think we do experience sq pre-conceptually.
Pre-conceptual reality is DQ.
Sophisticated patterns of sq, like trees, have the ability to appear
different at different times of the day, month, year. The same tree has many aspects
which can be expected (sq) or surprising (DQ)
The tree is a flux of patterns in the undifferentiated aesthetic continuum.

Gav:
doesn't a static pattern imply differentiation?

please help.....

Mark 23-10-06: Yes. However, differentiations may have within them
surprising relationships.
Hope this helps?
Love,
Mark
