Ben: Your post to Arlo is admirable. You present your arguments rationally
without rancor. I happened to pick up on the your statement above because
it connected intellect with altruism. As you probably know, Ayn Rand presented
a number of arguments to show that altruism is anything but intellectually
defensible. American's experience with the "War on Poverty" supports her
view.
I think this points up a question raised by Arlo's contention that morality
is to be determined by each individual, e.g.,if I decide it's moral to ignore
the needs of others, that's perfectly OK. There are no moral standards I have
a duty to consider other than my own. Or so it would seem from Arlo's premise.
