I think "My Sweet Lord" is hilarious and it doesn't make fun of
Christianity so much as it pokes fun at our ridiculous way of
celebrating Easter.
[Arlo]
Easter is simply the Christian variant of Spring Equinox
(Fertility... "rabbit", chocolate is a recent add-on, likely because
of its association with sexuality) celebrations, and as such adopted
many of the pagan rituals as Europe was "Christianized". The same
thing happened with Christmas, which was the Winter Solstice
celebration. (Halloween, which does not have a specific Christian
counterpart but is widely celebrated in the America, is a Fall
Equinox celebration.)
More than simply a take on the strange way Christians celebrate the
resurrection of their prophet, it represents the universal solar
origins of this holiday, and the borrowing that occurred as pagans
were forced into the flock. Using chocolate, I suppose, emphasizes
the sexuality-fertility connection to the holiday, something that has
long since been lost on a congregation with no grasp of its
historical origins. Another possible connection, the chocolate
represents the transition of "religion" from esoteric spirituality to
exoteric object of consumption (where we smack our lips on the idol
but make no effort to understand the parable).
