Hi Platt

Your cynicism about 'good folks', their values and the leaders they
elect would naturally lead to the statement I made about either
Americans or Brits. But, as I said in another post that I consider most
people to be basically decent then I wouldn't consider most Americans or
Brits to be as per the outcome of your statement. I think the leadership
problem lies in the choices available to the electorate - the most
prominent politicians (and GWB or Tony Blair in particular) are not fit
to be elected. Just my opinion but it seems to be shared by an awful lot
of people.

Also when I refer to 'basically decent' or 'basically good' folks I'm
not saying that they're saints or angels but that but that they do the
best that they can in the circumstances in which they find themselves.
If the circumstances are low quality then this is likely to reflect the
choices available to them and the likely outcome. But, in my experience,
people can, and more often than not do, act far better than their
circumstances would indicate.

I think it's a shame that your view of people would indicate a low
opinion of basically decent people trying their best to act well, often
in the face of adversity and it's a huge shame that the leaders that are
elected appear to be incapable of behaving as well as the majority of
people that elect them.

Cheers
