... and expressive of my reluctance to endorse gay marriage, pointing out that
law has a protective function to insure the social order can reproduce itself.

Since "gays" have been among us from the beginning, I doubt very much that
"homosexuality" prevents society from "reproducing itself". Once again, I ask
where the evidence of this is? Can anyone make any claim, "so-and-so threatens
the social order", and we jump to pass laws to prevent it?
Are we afraid that if allow gays to marry, straights will "become" gay? Would
you turn gay, Platt, if gays got the green light to marry? Are we afraid that
people will stop having babies? "Oh gee, I'd love to be gay, but there is a law
against gay marriage, so I think I'll have to be straight and make babies so
society can reproduce". Is THAT the thought process we are afraid of?
As to "gays marrying undermines my heterosexual marriage", I side with Former
Governor The Body who said, I have yet to hear anyone tell me how two married
gays living down the street threatens the bonds of my marriage.
Spoken like a true ilbertarian.
Is YOUR marriage, Platt, threatened by having two married men live down the
street? Would that "cheapen" your love for your wife? Would we say, "well,
Platt's marriage used to mean something, but then two men went ahead and got
married and now it means nothing".

I highly recommend that everyone listen to Scruton on the subject of why
freedom must at times be circumscribed.
