Marsha,

By "making money" I mean producing goods and services others willingly pay
for in a free market. You can also make money by loaning money to others either
directly or indirectly as investments.

As for the U.S. Treasury, you are absolutely right. They used to make money
backed by a commodity like silver or gold. Now they just print it
without any backing whatsoever. As a result, you have seen your savings 
decrease in value through no fault of your own. Inflation is the government's
way of robbing you blind without penalty.
