"And I'm not sure of what
you mean by E for acknowledgement. Acknowledgement?"
Among the many senses of the word, I'd select , in the context of Music Experience, these ones for 'acknowledge' : "To admit the existence, reality, or truth of." and /or "Recognition of another's existence".
Suppose we turn on the radio; sounds come out, which, if we pay Attention, we 'acknowledge' as music; that is we admit the existence of music or the truth of the fact we are listening to music and/or we recognize the existence of the music we are hearing. The moment we do that we are 'conscious' of a certain mental state: music listening.
In its most elementary (rudimentary?) form, undergoing an Experience could be described as 'being conscious of perceiving' and hence acknowledgment could be thought of as belonging to the very first stages of a experience.
The origin of the word may throw further light: " a blend of middle English 'aknow' (from old English. oncnawan 'understand,' from on + cnawan 'recognize' and M.E. verb knowlechen 'admit'. (from the ineffable Online Etymology Dictionary)
Taking some liberties with the above blend we could say that, simultaneously, we admit, we understand and we recognize that what we are hearing is music. This mental state my be followed by Recognition (another important component of the music experience); we 'recognize' the name and composer of the music we are listening to or, if not, at least the instruments or voices that may be responsible for the piece of music.
The borders between acknowledgement and recognition are bound to be quite fuzzy; the same for the borders between acknowledgement and attention. Some people talk of this a sequence : [perception]à [attention] à [acknowledgement]à [recognition] . I myself, I'm not very keen on the idea because, to even approximate what seems to happen, we'd have to introduce so many feedback loops that it wouldn't look as a sequence anymore.
Within the idea of the jigsaw puzzle representation I have been talking about I'd put acknowledgement as a piece within a larger one representing 'recognition' ; this large piece adjoining the pieces for perception and attention.
