This discussion began when LILA was just  out, and I have the 
impression that every possible and impossible angle have been 
explored  so I mistakenly believe that the  present participants  
know all these previous threads and  write accordingly, hence my 
uncalled for "kindergarten" remark.

No ill feelings, however I'm unsure of where to start. As you 
understand my "obsession" is the 4th level which IMO got a 
wrong start and that this has undone the MOQ. Pirsig obviously 
saw this  after some urging (the letter from Paul Turner and his 
reply in 2003) but seems unable to go to the root of the problem, 
instead tried to patch it up with a new "symbol manipulating" 
definition and some cryptic statements about an oriental - non-
S/O - intellectual level, none helping much. So the situation in 
2007 is the same as in 1997; nobody knows how the said level is 
to be understood. It goes from "consciousness" or "mind" to the 
said  "manipulation of symbols". 

My so called "SOLAQI" (SOL for short) interpretation says that 
the intellectual level is the former S/O metaphysics. The Quality 
idea began as an intellectual pattern, but the moment it organized 
itself along the dynamic/static slash it left its S/O-home, and after 
the static level arrangement the old SOM became its own top 
level and itself the meta-system (meta-level) that contains it all. 
This kind of re-shuffling is no mystery, all grand theories are "out  
of the former" and afterwards the former becomes the top sub-
system of the new theory.  Einstein's Physics (relativity) is out of 
Newtons Physics, but has NP as its own "best" sub-set. In fact NP 
is sufficient for all normal computations, only when it comes to 
the extreme (inside the sun, speeds approaching that of light) 
relativity must be applied.

This is in fact a good metaphor for the MOQ-S/O-intellect 
relationship. For all normal day-to-day purposes we apply S/O-
intellect and speak about subject and object, mind and matter, 
mental and material ...etc, to our herat's delight, only when it 
comes to the "extremes" - i.e: the ultimate metaphysical 
questions - the MOQ must be applied. Therefore it's not useful 
(as Pirsig suggests) to create Quality varieties of physics and 
other sciences, these are intellectual patterns and works best - 
can only work - as such.
