On paper, Jimmy Carter was one of the most qualified presidents: graduate
of a military academy, nuclear engineer, farmer, businessman, governor. As
it turned out, he was a disaster as President. He had poor judgment in
choosing advisors (e.g., Bert Lance, Andrew Young) & was incapable of
foreseeing the adverse consequences of his decisions. The only reason he
has any reputation remaining is that Reagan corrected his many mistakes.
[Case]
As a political outsider Carter faced constant opposition from the Washington
establishment. The policies of previous administrations democratic and
republican in the Middle East resulted in the economically disastrous oil
embargo. Carter's calls for conservation and reduction of demand still offer
the only realistic solutions to these ongoing problems which have only been
exacerbated by neglect.
Bert Lance was Carter's director of OMB for a short time. After being
accused of financial impropriety he resigned. Unlike so many in the Nixon
and Raygun administrations he was later acquitted of all charges.
Andrew Young has a life long record of public service in the civil rights
movement and in politics.
Raygun's record of political corruption and moral hypocrisy speaks for
itself.
