Case said to SA:
Nice job, but note that Dave only wants to let us use the parts that he
personally approves of.
dmb says:
What? I asked SA to use a dictionary to make the point that nobody needs to
take my word for it. For the sake of clarity, I tend to avoid the use of
special definitions. I try to write so that any english-speaking person
armed with a dictionary can understand what I'm saying. It also serves as a
kind of reality check, a relatively neutral arbitor of meaning.
Now do you REALLY think I don't know that dictionaries are going to provide
more than one definition for any given term? Do you REALLY think it would be
difficult for anyone to figure out which one makes sense in the context of
this debate? Do you REALLY think there is anything I can do to prevent a
person from looking at the various definitions of "faith" found there?
Its funny how the defenders of faith tend to rely so heavily on this sort of
irrational nonsense and strawmen. This how we end up with absurdities like
this, as if clear definitions are somehow oppressive, as if reference to the
dictionary is a hiding tactic.
