On Behalf Of Ham Priday
Truthfully, Ian, I didn't catch the drift of what you were saying. Ron
had stated his belief that the
methodology of quantum mechanics is somehow unique in a way that
complements Pirsig's "pragmatism".
I must admit my ignorance of both. I don't see anything "pragmatic"
about the MoQ and, as far as I
know, quantum physics is a legitimate branch of the physical sciences
which follows the methods I
quoted from the Univ. of Rochester's website; briefly, 1) Observation of
the phenomenon, 2)
Development.of an hypothesis, 3) Testing the predictability of the
hypothesis, and 4) Obtaining
corroborative experimental evidence.
[Ron]
I was simply saying that scientists and mathmaticians were exploring new
methods of creating models
that would more accurately predict quantum phenomena. Topos theory is
one of these methods being explored
whereas formally a scientist would isolate an object of study to test
hypotheses in a true/ false
method which yields Jos's "weird" results and odd observable phenomena,
the ideas now being pursued
are to observe/model objects in their relative system. when Pirsig talks
about the method for approaching
working on a motorcycle he is talking about system theory and how things
are relational in a cycle.
>From a mechanical perspective he talks a great deal about mechanics and
the process of diagnosing
a problem in a system. He talks about how preconceptions will allow you
to overlook possible causes
and how several overlooked possibilities will amount to a huge failure
in the system. After all this
he states that the cycle you work on is the cycle of yourself. Now how
much more practicle do you want
to get? I mean it is called "Zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance"
not "the purpose of man in the
universe" sometimes reffered to as a bible. Pirsig tells you it is all
in YOUR hands, get
a wrench, find what quality means to YOU. This idea appeals to me.
but there is something to be said for "belief" which I'm going to post
as soon as I get to it.
