Ant,

That's a tough, I give up. On the net the quote is most often ascribed to
William James but also to Henry James, Knute Rockne and Edward R. Murrow. I
could not find it in digital copies of five or six volumes of James' work.

I did find this in Vol. 1 of his Principles of Psychology 1890:

"Who can swear that his prejudices and irrational beliefs constitute a less
bulky part of his mental furniture than his clarified opinions?"

Not sure if that makes it Young James, Old James or Midlife Crisis James.
