[MD] thought on terrorism

Greetings again,
I'd like to bring into this conversation a personal dilemma. What do
you do when a person, people, or a country you care about seem to be
behaving badly? What do you do?
My mother, who is 84, is a coal-miner's daughter, and was brought up
in Detroit. She and my stepfather are now reasonably comfortable and
retired in Florida. They recently came into a little money. My
mother insisted on getting herself a Cadillac (gas guzzler). I am
beside myself because I think that she is clueless. I can see this
purchase as adding to our environmental problems, and contributing to
George Bush, Bin Laden and the endless killing of innocent people in
the MiddleEast. She sees this as a little bit of happiness. I think
if everybody is clueless we are doomed.
So what do you do when a person, people, or a country you care about
seem to be behaving badly? What do you do when reason doesn't seem
to be working. I think a Buddhist might say to act responsibly
yourself, and chop wood & carry water. But I'm not a Buddhist, so I
could be wrong. And of course there are the actions I am blindly
performing myself that also add to the problems. I mentioned the
MIddleEast and the environment, but there are other ways of defining
the problem. And when I start looking at them, the problems change
and grow exponentially. HELP!
BTW, to care about a person, people or a country is attachment.
I bring up this particular situation because it offers a way to see
many different perspectives. Can it be untangled.
Marsha
