Hi All,
Just received notice from the Director of the Sterling and Francine Clark
Art Institute in Williamstown, Mass. that the former president and
chairman of the American International Group (AIG), Edwin A. G. Manton
(Jim) has bequeathed over 200 paintings by J.M.W. Turner, John Constable
and Thomas Gainsborough plus a $50 million endowment to support the
Clark's Research and Academic Program.
How many similar institutions have benefited from donations by oft
pilloried barons of business? Too many to count I venture.
Incidentally, if you are ever in the Williamstown, MA vicinity and have
even a slight interest in art, I urge you to visit the Clark Museum. It's
collection rivals the best in the world. You will be amazed. The display
of sketches, paintings and sculpture will weaken for a moment your
existing static patterns in such a way that the Dynamic Quality all around
you will shine through. Guaranteed.
Best regards,
Platt
