Ian said to dmb:
...surely the experience of DQ, the art of the possible, is about as real as
it gets?
dmb says:
That begs the question. My objection is that one can't rightly equate "the
possible" with DQ precisely because DQ is known in experience while "the
possible" is outside of experience. Again, we can imagine what might be the
case and those speculations are actual and real but they refer to that which
is still outside of experience. "The possible" is a sign that refers to
nothing. We can ever know "the possible" in experience because if we did it
would not be "the possible". When we know it in experience it is actual. It
no longer merely possible.
I think the whole idea makes about as much sense as putting butter in a gun.
If Sneddon's view is fairly represented by David M's comments on the topic,
which stikes me as very unlikely, then I guess I'd have to disagree with him
too. My guess is that a decent idea was badly translated by David M and we'd
all be well served by some quotes from the original. How much do you want to
bet that Sneddon could be used against the things David M is saying here?
I'd bet nearly a dollar and I haven't even read it yet. Seriously, man, I've
got 87 cents and I'm willing to put it all on the line.
Ian also said:
It's kinda so obvious (to me) and equally obvious that DMB is not DuMB, that
I feel I must be missing DMB's particular point ? What are we missing DMB
(is thus just a linguistic argument over the word
"real" maybe)?
dmb says:
Well, its just as obvious to me and that's why we disagee. And I hardly
think a dispute about what constitutes reality is "just" a linguistic
argument. I disagree with it both logically and metaphysically. It defies
common sense, common definitions and sounds pretentious as hell to boot.
Sorry, but I'm not very surprized to learn that the king of drivel thinks
this nonsense is obvious.
