Some vandals may think it is better for them if they vandalize.  Others may do
it out of self-loathing, low self-esteem, etc.  Others without even thinking.

I imagine all vandals do what they do because of something positive it brings
them, even if this is simply relief from self-loathing, dealing with perceive
inequity, or reaching out for help, or protesting injustice, or masochism, or
whatever. The point is, it is at odds with (most) current social value, and so
it is criminalized. You think its wrong because you are taking a social-level
perspective. But to the individual doing it, it must feel "right" in some way
or they wouldn't do it.
