My shoes fall to the floor when I take them off at night, but I hardly
attribute to them an inner life of experience that makes them say "ouch"
when they hit the floor. Only in man made cartoons do heaps like rocks,
shoes and motorcycles become animate. By themselves they react not. As
for robots . . . well there the question of an inner life gets hairy.
