Arlo,

I mountain bike and hike. Had an 8.4 mile hike planned this morning. But the
recent snow and temp drop lead to something different; a 3 mile hike through some
state game lands southeast of French Creek State Park. Three close friends and I
are 30 miles into the Horse-Shoe trail, a 140 mile, equestrian and hiker trail from
Valley Forge to the Appalachian trail north of Harrisburg.
Why does anyone do anything? These hikes are most definitely not about reaching
the end of the trail. The trail is more like a vehicle for something much greater. We
experience nature and our friendships. And we talk about things. I almost always
say something about my involvement here. Jim usually has something to say
about Ken Wilber. And we're all getting much closer to solving the problems of the
universe.
I'm sure none of us thinks we don't bring our false selves on these hikes. But at the
same time I'm just as sure that everyone intends to be present to his own and the
other men's true selves.

There's nothing necessarily wrong with the false self. It's just not the true self.
