I guess Pirsig is agreeing with Dennett, Hofstadter and others that "self" is an
illusion although you will note above his reference to "I." If it is an
illusion it seems to be a useful one. From my perspective, "I" is what protects
the independence of the individual and the intellectual level from the forces
of "we." Also it is the "I" that responds to DQ.
