Before man (and these levels) how did things respond to DQ? - make no sense.
How can you know something, before you are there to know something? I don't
understand how to make sense of these questions.

Are you suggesting that nothing responded to DQ before "man", in the sense that
"man" is the only "thing" to have ever existed that has ever responded to DQ?
In the sense that "man" has no way of knowing what or how things responded to
DQ before "man"? Or in the sense that nothing existed before "man", so the
question is mute?

Did _anything_ exist 100 million years ago? If so, was there anything at all
that responded to DQ? Or was it all simply SQ until "man" came around?
