I've seen this before in some of my books about taijiquan and qigong..I
studied a form of wu-dan shan  it's defense is in Qi disruption .
Qigong does use anti-oxidant herbs such as kale and fasting to cleanse
The system along with yoga like exercise to open the flow of Qi through
Out the body. The concept is balance and harmony of mind and body
With the idea being that which harmonizes tends to last.
I know folks who swear by it.
Li_Chung_Yun did exist, how old he was will always be a mystery.
