Hi Peter,
Perhaps. The paintings remind me of that place between consciousness
and sleep. I've been at such a place a few times. It's a descent,
or the opposite of evolution, to fish or embryos or strange
multi-celled creatures. It's not a place of fear, but a place of
origins, or so it seems to me. RMP wrote about it in an episode with Lila.
Personally, I am uncomfortable with his palette. While I love all
things Spanish, his paintings seem to have that bright Mediterranean
color: red, yellow, orange, black. And I cannot handle that for too
long without getting a headache. But that's a personal quirk and has
nothing to do with the value of his paintings. They are interesting, though.
A painter I really like is Vachagan Narazyan. He's Russian, and I
think I've read he's designated a neosurrealist. I actually own one
of his smaller paintings.
