Some folks will fight no matter the reasoning,
They just want to fight, some people I experienced 
define their lives And relationships through confrontation.
(my wife and her family do this) when I do not fight
I'm accused of not caring.

I agree, interesting story.

There is an alternative ending. The younger hermit simply runs out of
static reason only, he has ignored dynamic / time / process aspects
entirely.

Rather than agreeing to divide the material in space, he should have
suggested divining in time. We use the bowl on alternate days - we
each own half of "it".
