[MD] Who Killed the Electric Car?

Marsha,

I saw it in the theater a while back. It is pretty outrageous. The GM car
they highlight was available for lease only and only in California. At the
end of the lease terms GM insisted on collecting and destroying them
sometime over the vigorous protest of owners even groups of owners who
wanted to keep them.

Perhaps the most upsetting aspect of the film was that batteries were
developed that would have doubled the range of the cars. But the patents
were eventually purchased by oil companies who insist that they can only be
used in vehicles that derive a certain percentage of their power from
gasoline, hence we have hybrids.

Consider that most hybrid cars do not come standard with a simple plug in
the wall feature to let you charge the batteries. They only get charged
while the gas engine is running. If you plug the car into the wall to charge
the batteries you could potentially get almost 100 MPG. I am pulling that
number from memory but it was nearly double what hybrids are said to get.

It is also sad that hybrids typically have relatively more powerful gas
engines coupled with smaller electric motors. The 2007 Camry hybrid for
example has a 147 hp gas engine and a 40 hp electric engine. Seems like
those ratios outta be reversed.

Greetings,

While President Bush is asking Congress to approve a free trade
agreement with Colombia, take a look at the type of free trade
available to Americans. I am told that this movie has been playing
on cable, too.
