Suppose we suspend by a string, 2 bar magnets, opposite ends labelled N & S.
The N end of
one magnet rotates toward the S end of the other. What options for
understanding this are there:
1) The N particles value proximity to the S particles (&/or vice versa).
2) A third thing--magnetic force--forces the N particles toward the S
particles.
(This pushes the explanation back a level: what explains how a magnetic
force does this.)
3) There is no explanation--all we can say is: that's what happens when the
ends are magnetized.
Can anyone think of any other options?

Yeah, Santa controls the north pole and sends out really tiny elves to talk
to all the south poles and convince them to move towards the north.
