Why wouldn't the social level recognize its break with the 
biological level? Clearly not because there aren't intelligence 
around, but because no level knows any level context, the 4th. no 
exception. When the idea that SOM (what became "intellect" in 
the first MOQ) was a subset of Quality occurred to Phaedrus, the 
intellectual immune system attacked him and struck him down 
and the Pirsig who emerged from hospital did not dare to follow 
the original path. 

Only from the MOQ do we see that all static level suffer from the 
illusion of being reality itself, but (as I wrote to Arlo) we also see 
that this limitation is necessary for the levels to work properly. An 
intellect aware of its social origin would be a mere social 
appendix, just what it sounds like Pirsig wants it to be. Admittedly 
he avoids the term "intellect", but speaks of science and/or 
knowledge as having forgotten the said origin , because - to him - 
these are the villainous SOM that has raped the neutral valueless 
"intellect". 

OK, I see that you try to meet me halfway, but nothing will do but 
recognize intellect for what it is, a static level with a limited set of 
value, the S/O.
