I'm promoting individual freedom within a social structure that keeps 
biological forces of destruction at bay. Incidentally, Pirsig reserves 
"society" as he uses the term to human society.

See this is the crux of the problem. Society is not at war with biology.
Biology is not a force for destruction. On the contrary biology and
biological urges are nurturing and promote individual survival. What is at
war are the needs of the individual against the needs of other individuals.
Societies even, or especially even, families exist to balance the needs of
individuals with the needs of other group member. We all go hungry but no
one starves.
