The smell of woodland soil
of decaying leaves of molded
tree bark and nuts.
the smell of the beach trees and
poplar, the oaks their sap
the hint of hemlock and pine
needles.
out in the farm lands
the smell of fresh cut hay.
I remember long hot days
bailing and loading wagons
stopping to dip in the creek
before the barnyard and an
afternoon stacking in the loft.
In that barnyard it stayed 1952
frozen in time. drinking from the hose
feeling tired but spiritually full and good.
as the breeze washed over me in the
late afternoon with the scent of the corn
in the corn cribs and the oil and grease
of the tractors.
My uncle, just back from Vietnam, would
take me on hell rides on his motorcycle
and play chicken in his 63 impala, let me
drive the milk truck in the fields...
